Additionally, I heard two grown men who were in the shower when we left being shouted at for being late.

Beautifully restored monastery. Excellent volunteer staff run it very efficiently and with a friendly welcoming atmosphere.

Great restored property for you first night on the camino. Some of the best facilities you will have. Nice four person bunk cubes. Now only taking half their capacity.

Overall, this is what the Camino is supposed to be and represent.

There are so many aspects to this review where to be honest this was our first experience of a "Refuge" / "Pilgrim Hostel" and expectations were not so high considering what it is and the relatively cheap price. However, to try and keep it short:

Newly renovated hostel with comparably good facilities. We didnt try the laundry or the meal.

That really has no place. This is after the initial stage of the Camino Frances - the worst stage crossing the Pyrenees with the added complication of it being the first stage where many a pilgrim is suffering the most from this new-found torture of walking 25km plus in mountains.

Facilities (Rating 5): Clean and modern with communal toilet and showers and bunk beds, however each bed had a large locker available for use. Only downside was no blanket is provided.

Stayed here on April 30, 2012 during my pilgrimage to Santiago de Campostela. Thanks to all hospitallers.

During check in where our bed allocations got screwed up we met with equal attitude and lack of cooperation.

A couple of the male Dutch hospitaliers deserve mentioning though. As many other hostels we met later, the check out time is 8am. This might make sense in summer but in October when we visited (and later in the year too and early spring) this means the sun hasnt risen by the time you get kicked out. And this is where Roncesvalle stands out. Whereas other hospitaliers would be relaxed and flexible, these guys were very rough and direct when we were literally minutes over going out. First in the hall where we were lectured (not just once but repeatedly by the same guy) and later below at the exit where we were asked to go outside to take on our shoes at 8:07am - here a dozen of pilgrims were sitting doing the same after a similar treatment.

These hospitaliers might well be volunteers but why not join an army outfit or Ryanair if hard discipline and treating people like cattle is what you seek. Why not wake up to the meaning of the word hospitality - related to the word hospitaliers that these Dutch men proudly carry - and the tradition of the hostels and monasteries actually helping pilgrims suffering from sore legs and exhaustion. Why not relax the kick out (check out) time during the dark months and lighten up a little.
